Colyer Herefords

Colyer Herefords has raised registered Hereford cattle in Bruneau, Idaho, since the operation was founded by Ray and Bonnie Colyer, making it one of the longer-running family ranches producing Hereford cattle for sale in Idaho. Bruneau sits in Owyhee County, roughly an hour south of Boise in the high desert of the Snake River Plain.

Guy Colyer grew up on the family's commercial Hereford ranch and built the registered herd into what it is today alongside his wife Sherry. Guy was later inducted into the American Hereford Association Hall of Fame, a recognition given to breeders who have meaningfully advanced the breed. The operation now spans multiple generations, with Kyle, Katie, and their families all active on the ranch.

The program maintains around 300 registered Hereford cows and 75 replacement heifers, with both horned and polled lines represented. Herd sires are chosen for their value to commercial cattlemen rather than purely for the show ring, with selection criteria focused on moderate frame, fleshing ability, fertility, and structural soundness. The ranch uses ultrasound, DNA markers, embryo transplants, and herd management software to inform breeding decisions. Female selection follows a balanced multi-trait approach, with individual cows evaluated against conditions similar to those faced by the operation's commercial bull customers.

Colyer Herefords competes at major national shows, including the Western Nugget National Hereford Show in Reno and the National Western Stock Show in Denver, and has earned premier breeder recognition at the horned show level. The family has also hosted the Idaho Junior State Hereford Field Day and the Northwest Regional Show, reflecting a long-standing involvement in Hereford youth programs across the region.
