Coates Ranch Co. has been raising registered Hereford cattle in Mertzon, Texas, from land that spans Irion, Reagan, and surrounding counties where the Edwards Plateau gives way to the semi-arid Permian Basin. The ranch itself dates to 1905, and the registered Hereford herd traces its origins to 1927, when a founding cowherd was assembled and a multi-generational family tradition took hold.

One of the most distinctive aspects of the program is that the ranch has raised its own replacement females continuously since that original cowherd was established, never purchasing outside females. The herd, currently around 500 registered cows, is built on Line One and Anxiety 4th bloodlines, with herd sires selected to complement that foundation.
