Coalbank Creek Land & Livestock
Coalbank Creek Land & Livestock raises yaks on roughly 40 acres in Nunn, Colorado, in northern Weld County about 30 miles northeast of Greeley, with the Front Range foothills visible in the distance. Brad Peterson and Mary Jo Brockshus founded the operation in 2007, building their herd around the goal of producing quality, registered yaks for meat, fiber, and herd establishment.
The program has earned recognition at a national level. The ranch's bull Shiva earned multiple Grand Champion titles at the International Yak Association-sanctioned show at the National Western Stock Show, and several CBC-prefix animals have placed in yearling, heifer, and aged female classes at the same event. For those searching for American yak breeders in Colorado, the herd's show record reflects a consistent focus on conformation, structure, and fiber quality.
Brockshus and Peterson advise starting with young animals to allow for proper gentling, and describe their herd as personable and workable when handled regularly from an early age. The operation is registered with the International Yak Association and has been active for well over a decade.
