Butterkup Farms
Butterkup Farms raises registered Jersey and Lowline cattle in Dunster, British Columbia, a rural community in the Rocky Mountain Trench northeast of Prince George. Melanie Brumley-Guttner founded the operation in 2000 with a single part-bred Jersey heifer, and the farm earned its official registered Jersey prefix in 2003 before expanding into full-blood registered Lowlines in 2009.
The farm spans 217 acres at the base of Pink Mountain, and the cattle are raised on a grass-fed program. Breeding selections emphasize quiet, gentle dispositions, good conformation, and strong milk traits including high butterfat and high protein content. The herd is also moving toward A2/A2 genetics. Miniature Jersey cattle round out the program alongside the standard Jerseys and Lowlines.
For buyers seeking registered Jersey cattle or Lowline cattle in British Columbia, the program's Northern climate has proven a natural proving ground. The Lowlines in particular were chosen after research into cold-hardiness, and the herd has performed through extended stretches of severe winter conditions that are common to the region.
