Bridger Backcountry Llamas
Bridger Backcountry Llamas raises ccara (classic) llamas in Montana's Gallatin Valley, not far from Bozeman, with a focus on producing capable backcountry pack stock from proven western bloodlines.
Dr. Jeff Stutts established the operation in 2003, and the fifty-acre property is split between a home place and a dedicated packer pasture. The Gallatin Valley's montane, semi-arid climate brings temperate summers and cold winters that keep endemic parasites and biting insects to a minimum. Fertile valley soil, irrigated sweetgrass pastures, and locally renowned hay contribute to raising large, consistently healthy animals. Rocky ground on the property also naturally wears hooves and toughens pads.
The breeding program draws on a broad mix of major western pack-llama lineages, with sires and dams selected for muscling, strength, and solid pack drive. Crias are imprinted early and halter-trained using a modified Mallon method. Those looking for ccara llamas for sale in Montana bred specifically for backcountry use will find a program grounded in both working-condition terrain and a deliberate effort to preserve the integrity of the western pack lines.
