Blackmtnbengals, run by Janet Rennecker in Ramona, California, has been breeding bengals for over 17 years, placing the cattery in the hills east of San Diego and within an easy drive of the broader San Diego metro area.

The cattery is registered with TICA, CFA, and TIBCS, and breeders come from TICA-registered championship lines. Health testing is a central part of the program: all adult cats are screened annually for HCM by a board-certified cardiologist, and every breeding cat is genetically tested for PRA-b and PK Def through UC Davis VGL or Wisdom Panel. Cats with any known heritable health condition are not used in the breeding program.

Kittens are raised indoors and handled daily from an early age, with the goal of producing bengal kittens in Southern California that are as social and people-oriented as they are visually striking. The program places a particular emphasis on large, open tri-colored rosettes. All cats in the cattery are fed a human-grade raw diet rather than dry food, a practice Janet ties directly to long-term kidney health and longevity. Breeding is kept intentionally measured — queens are given time to recuperate between litters rather than being cycled continuously.
