Bear-Acres Kennel

Bear-Acres Kennel in Bedford, Kentucky has been raising Newfoundlands since 1988, with Bernese mountain dogs becoming part of the program starting in 1991. Run by Debbie Wright, the kennel sits in Trimble County, roughly 45 minutes northeast of Louisville in Kentucky's Bluegrass region.

Health testing is a central part of how Bear-Acres approaches both breeds. Newfoundlands are tested and certified for hips, elbows, heart, patellas, and cystinuria, while Bernese mountain dogs are screened for hips, elbows, patellas, heart, vWb, eyes, and degenerative myelopathy. Results are filed with OFA and posted on the kennel's site. AKC champion lines factor into both the Newfoundland and Berner side of the program.
