Avalon Middle School FFA
Avalon Middle School FFA, Katahdin sheep, Orlando, FL, in Central Florida near Tampa. Since the chapter’s inception, the flock has provided students with hands-on experience following guidelines from national sheep associations, state livestock extension services, and routine veterinary checkups.
Animals graze on a rotational pasture system beside the school farm, where faculty supervise daily care including gentle handling, hoof inspection and shelter cleaning. Breeding stock is selected for parasite resistance and calm temperament, and members learn record keeping alongside veterinary-recommended vaccinations. Through county fair participation and in-class presentations, students develop skills in flock management and public speaking. Sheep have access to covered barns stocked with fresh water and mineral supplements throughout the year. Local veterinarians conduct regular herd health evaluations, including parasite monitoring and foot health checks. Regular farm tours for families foster transparent communication and appreciation for agricultural education.
