5L Red Angus

5L Red Angus raises registered red Angus cattle outside Sheridan, Montana, in the heart of the Ruby Valley in southwestern Montana, roughly an hour south of Butte.

The brand name itself tells the family story: the five L's stand for Lawrence, Lillian, Larry, Linda, and Lenny Mehlhoff, a ranching family that began raising red Angus in the late 1970s in North Dakota before establishing their Montana operation. Today the program has grown into one of the largest registered red Angus seedstock operations in the country, breeding nearly 2,000 registered females each spring alongside more than 600 heifers annually.

Cattle at 5L are managed with a strong emphasis on low-input hardiness. The cowherd winters out on standing forage, often 70 miles from headquarters, with minimal supplementation and no hay — a management strategy designed to apply real-world selection pressure on fertility, body condition, and self-sufficiency. Female selection centers on proven performance: cows are evaluated after they have bred, calved unassisted, rebred on time, and weaned a calf. In addition to straight red Angus genetics, the program develops Profit+Plus black red-carrier cattle, Opti-Bull Charolais-cross bulls, and SimAngus hybrids, giving commercial ranchers across Montana and beyond a range of crossbreeding tools built on the same cow-herd foundation.
