Mixed Variety
A mixed variety zebra cichlid is a zebra cichlid whose aquarium or aquaculture line combines color varieties, locality backgrounds, or domestic selections. Zebra cichlids are mbuna from Lake Malawi, and many hobby names are tied to color form, collection area, or long-running captive strains. Mixed variety is an important honesty label because visual similarity alone cannot prove a pure locality line.
Aquarists should manage these fish as active rock-dwelling cichlids that need hard alkaline water, strong filtration, territories, and tankmates chosen for comparable temperament. Breeders who care about locality integrity should avoid mixing uncertain fish into pure lines. Mixed-variety stock can still be attractive and healthy, but it belongs in general hobby breeding or display tanks rather than in programs claiming a specific lake population.
