Unknown Variety

An unknown variety zebra cichlid is a zebra cichlid whose exact color form, strain, or locality background has not been documented. In the aquarium trade, zebra-type mbuna may pass through several hands before a keeper receives them, and names can become detached from reliable source information. Unknown variety protects both the buyer and the fish record from an overconfident label.

These cichlids should still be given a serious mbuna setup with rock structure, clean hard water, vegetable-forward feeding, and enough room to reduce constant chasing. If breeding happens, offspring should be described as unknown-background or mixed unless parentage is later clarified. That honesty matters because Lake Malawi cichlid keepers often separate display fish from conservation-minded or locality-specific breeding lines.
