Unknown Strain
An unknown strain yellow mealworm is a Tenebrio molitor colony whose source line or selection history is not known. This is common in feeder production, where cultures may be started from pet-store larvae, surplus beetles, or mixed supplier stock. Unknown strain does not imply poor quality; it simply means the culture cannot be tied to a documented breeding line.
For reptile keepers, bird breeders, fish keepers, and insect producers, the main concerns are cleanliness, reliable output, and appropriate nutrition before feeding. A colony with unknown strain history should be quarantined from established cultures until mites, mold, and die-offs are ruled out. Once stable, it can be managed with ordinary mealworm records covering substrate, temperature, moisture, harvest size, and refresh dates.
