X-Ray Tetra

Pristella maxillaris

The X-Ray Tetra, scientifically known as Pristella maxillaris, is a small, fascinating freshwater fish renowned for its distinctive transparent body. Native to the coastal river basins of South America, particularly the Orinoco and Amazon River systems, this species thrives in both freshwater and brackish environments. The X-Ray Tetra's most striking feature is its translucent skin, which allows its backbone and internal organs to be faintly visible, giving it a unique "x-ray" appearance.

This semi-transparent body is complemented by vibrant coloration on its fins: the dorsal and anal fins showcase a yellow hue, often accented with black and white bands, adding a splash of color to its otherwise clear anatomy. Growing up to around 5 cm (2 inches) in length, these tetras are peaceful, schooling fish, making them a popular choice for community aquariums. Their adaptable nature allows them to tolerate a range of water conditions, streamlining their care requirements.

In the wild, their diet consists of small invertebrates, while in captivity, they thrive on a diet of high-quality flake food, supplemented by live or frozen foods to ensure a well-rounded diet. Their tranquil temperament, coupled with their distinctive appearance, makes the X-Ray Tetra a captivating addition to any aquarium.
