Western Diamond-Backed Rattlesnake
Crotalus atrox
The western diamond-backed rattlesnake is a live-bearing pit viper of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. It has pale-edged dark dorsal diamonds, a broad facially striped head and contrasting black and white tail bands before the segmented rattle. Specialist venomous-snake collections provide secure terrestrial accommodation with cover and a controlled thermal gradient.
Its venom is medically significant, and possession can require dangerous-animal permits. It is distinct from the eastern diamondback and other desert rattlesnakes.
