Tasmanian Devil

Sarcophilus harrisii

The Tasmanian devil (Sarcophilus harrisii) is a stocky carnivorous marsupial found wild only in Tasmania. Since the loss of the thylacine, it has been the largest living carnivorous marsupial, with a broad head, powerful jaws, black fur, and often a white chest or rump marking. Devils hunt small animals but are especially efficient scavengers, using scent and strong teeth to open carcasses that many predators cannot. Their growls, screeches, and open-mouthed threat displays are social signals around food and dens rather than evidence of a constantly aggressive temperament.

Tasmanian devils are protected wildlife, not suitable pets. Zoos, wildlife parks, and conservation breeding programs house them in secure carnivore enclosures with dens, sturdy barriers, cooling options, and enrichment that allows digging, scent investigation, and chewing. Diets are based on whole prey, carcass portions, and balanced carnivore rations to support dental and bone health. Management is shaped by devil facial tumour disease, a transmissible cancer that has caused severe population declines in many areas. Insurance populations, health screening, roadkill reduction, and carefully planned releases are all part of current stewardship, alongside public education about leaving wild devils undisturbed.
