Mixed Variety

A mixed-variety swordtail is a domestic Xiphophorus hellerii from blended color or fin lines rather than a single named strain. Such fish may produce red, orange, green, black, koi, marigold, neon, pineapple, wagtail, hi-fin, lyretail, or other combinations across a group of offspring. Pet shops often sell these as assorted swordtails, and some may include ancestry from related platies because domestic Xiphophorus lines have been crossed in the aquarium hobby for many years.

Mixed-variety swordtails are kept for the same reasons as named strains: movement, color, and steady livebearing in community aquariums. They prefer stable, mineral-rich water, vegetable matter in the diet, and enough space for active males to display without constantly stressing females. Fry appear regularly if adults of both sexes are present, so keepers should plan for extra fish or provide predators, separation, or rehoming options. Breeders wanting predictable offspring should start with a documented strain; mixed groups are better for casual display or broad genetic variety.

Colors: Berlin, Black, Green, Hi-Fin, Koi, Lyretail, Marigold, Neon, Orange, Pineapple, Red, Simpson, Tuxedo, Wagtail, Yellow
