Hi-Fin

Hi-Fin

A hi-fin swordtail is a domestic variety of Xiphophorus hellerii selected for an enlarged, elevated dorsal fin. The fish retains the classic swordtail outline, with males carrying a lower tail extension, but the tall dorsal gives both sexes a showier profile. Hi-fin can appear on many color strains, including red, orange, black, koi, pineapple, and wagtail. Because aquarium swordtails have been selectively bred for generations, individual fish may also show influence from related Xiphophorus lines used in the trade.

The long dorsal fin is attractive but needs clean water and tankmates that will not nip. Hi-fin swordtails are active livebearers suited to planted aquariums with open swimming room, a tight lid, and moderately hard to alkaline water. Males can pester females, so groups are usually managed with extra females or separated sexes. Breeders selecting for hi-fin should keep the best-finned fish healthy rather than only chasing length, since torn fins, poor body shape, and weak fertility can become problems in crowded or closely bred lines.

Colors: Black, Koi, Orange, Pineapple, Red, Wagtail
