Unclassified Strain
An unclassified-strain superworm is a Zophobas morio colony that has not been assigned to a named commercial, laboratory, or hobby line. It is still the standard superworm: a large, active darkling beetle larva with a tough body and tan to brown coloring, turning pale just after a molt and eventually developing into a black adult beetle. In feeder-insect production, many colonies are simply maintained for size, survival, and availability rather than for documented strain traits.
Keepers use unclassified superworms much like any other feeder stock, paying more attention to freshness and husbandry than to the label. Good colonies smell clean and dry, with little mold, few dead larvae, and visible feed material rather than wet rot. They do best at warm room temperatures in dry grain bedding with slices of carrot, squash, or other moisture foods removed before spoiling. Anyone starting a breeding bin should separate mature larvae for pupation and avoid mixing questionable stock into established colonies without a short quarantine.
