Mixed Strain

A mixed-strain superworm refers to a colony of Zophobas morio larvae drawn from more than one feeder-insect line or source. Superworms are the large larvae of a darkling beetle, sold for reptiles, amphibians, birds, fish, and some insectivorous mammals. Strain names in this species are usually commercial or hobby terms, not formal breeds. Color differences such as tan, gold, brown, dark, or pale white often reflect age, feeding, and recent molting as much as genetics.

Mixed-strain colonies are valued by some keepers because combining lines can maintain vigor and production, but they should still be managed for cleanliness and consistent size. Superworms are kept warm and dry in bran, oats, or similar bedding with vegetable moisture sources; refrigeration can kill them. Larvae pupate only when isolated, so breeding requires separating mature individuals into small cups or cells. Feeders should be gut-loaded before use and offered in sensible amounts because their chitin and fat content are not suitable as the only food for most animals.
