Petaurus breviceps

The sugar glider, Petaurus breviceps, is a small nocturnal marsupial related to other Australasian gliding possums. It has a soft gray coat, a dark stripe down the face and back, large eyes, and a skin membrane stretching from wrist to ankle that lets it glide between trees. In the wild, sugar gliders feed on gum, sap, nectar, pollen, insects, and other small prey, and they live in social groups that den in tree hollows. Captive animals in the pet trade may include lines from more than one closely related Petaurus form, so common names do not always match current taxonomy perfectly.

As pets, sugar gliders are legal in some places and restricted in others, and they are best approached as nocturnal colony animals rather than pocket pets. Compatible pairs or groups, a tall secure cage, sleeping pouches, branches, exercise wheels made for gliders, and regular out-of-cage handling after trust is built are common requirements. Diet is a major welfare issue: fruit alone or seed mixes are not enough, and many keepers use established nectar-style diets with insects, produce, and careful calcium balance.
