Serval

Leptailurus serval

The serval, Leptailurus serval, is a long-legged wild cat from African grasslands, wetlands, and savanna margins. Its tall ears, small head, golden coat, and black spots are adaptations for locating and pouncing on rodents, birds, reptiles, and insects in dense cover. Servals are sometimes confused with domestic cat breeds that have serval ancestry, but a full serval remains a powerful, high-drive wild carnivore.

Serval care belongs mainly in licensed zoos, sanctuaries, conservation programs, or highly regulated exotic-animal settings. Large secure enclosures, species-appropriate raw or whole-prey nutrition, veterinary expertise, and careful safety protocols are basic requirements for staff and visitor safety. Private ownership is restricted or prohibited in many places, and hand-rearing does not remove wild behavior. Facilities that breed or transfer servals usually document origin, health, and temperament closely to avoid poor placements.

Colors: Golden with Black Spots, Melanistic (Black)
