Mixed Morph

A mixed morph Russian tortoise is a Testudo horsfieldii showing color or pattern traits from more than one informal captive label, such as high yellow, dark phase, or normal wild type. Russian tortoises are small, hardy, burrowing tortoises from Central Asian steppe and semi-desert habitats. They are recognized by a low oval shell, stout limbs, and four claws on each forefoot, with natural shell color ranging from straw or olive tones to darker brown markings.

Morph labels in this species are less standardized than in many snakes or lizards, so a mixed morph should be viewed mainly as a description of appearance, not a separate care type. These tortoises need dry, well-drained housing, strong basking heat, ultraviolet light indoors, and a high-fiber diet of weeds, grasses, and suitable leafy greens. Outdoor pens must be secure below ground as well as at the edges, because Russian tortoises dig and climb better than their size suggests.

Colors: Dark Phase, High Yellow, Normal/Wild Type
