Unknown Morph
An unknown morph Russian tortoise is a Russian tortoise whose color category has not been identified or recorded. Testudo horsfieldii is a compact tortoise from Central Asia, often sold as the Russian, Horsfield's, Afghan, or steppe tortoise. Most have a tan to olive carapace with dark blotches, though captive animals may be described as high yellow, dark, or normal depending on the community using the label.
An unknown morph does not change the animal's basic needs. Keepers should provide a dry enclosure with deep substrate for digging, a hot basking zone, ultraviolet exposure, and a diet centered on unsprayed weeds and leafy greens. Many Russian tortoises in the pet trade have been wild collected, so source, age estimate, parasite screening, and acclimation history are important questions. For breeding projects, an unknown morph should be recorded honestly to avoid creating misleading color claims in future offspring.
