River Cooter

Pseudemys concinna

The river cooter is a large egg-laying freshwater turtle of central and southeastern North America. Its oval shell has pale curved or C-shaped markings, and the dark head and neck carry yellow stripes. It is kept in specialist turtle collections with ample clean swimming water, dry basking areas and nesting land.

The Eastern River Cooter, Pseudemys concinna concinna, is the nominate subspecies. Keepers can record it as a subspecies of the river cooter. It is distinct from the peninsula and Florida red-bellied cooters.
