The Red-Shouldered Macaw, scientifically known as Diopsittaca nobilis, is a vibrant and lively parrot species native to the tropical regions of South America, particularly in countries like Brazil, Venezuela, and the Guianas. As the smallest of the macaw family, they typically measure about 30 centimeters (approximately 12 inches) in length and weigh around 165 grams (about 5.8 ounces). Despite their small size, Red-Shouldered Macaws are renowned for their striking appearance featuring vivid green plumage, a bright red patch on their shoulders, and a distinctive bare facial area of pale white skin surrounding their expressive eyes. Their intimate and social nature makes them found in pairs or small groups within the treetops of savannas and lightly wooded areas.

These macaws are highly intelligent and playful, exhibiting a curious and energetic disposition that aids them in foraging for seeds, fruits, berries, and nuts, which make up the core of their diet. Known for their strong pair bonds, Red-Shouldered Macaws often engage in mutual grooming and synchronized movements, underscoring their affectionate interactions. In the wild, they are adept flyers and highly vocal, with a repertoire of calls ranging from sharp screeches to softer, more melodic notes. Conservation-wise, while not currently endangered, these birds face pressures from habitat loss and capture for the illegal pet trade, necessitating vigilant conservation efforts to ensure their continued survival in their native habitats.
