Red-Eared Slider
Trachemys scripta elegans
The red-eared slider, Trachemys scripta elegans, is a semi-aquatic turtle named for the red patch behind each eye and its habit of sliding quickly from basking sites into water. Native to parts of the central and southern United States, it became one of the most widely traded pet turtles in the world. Juveniles are small and bright, but adults are sturdy, long-lived animals with olive shells, yellow striping, and strong appetites.
Keeping red-eared sliders well requires more than a small bowl. They need a large filtered aquatic setup, dry basking access, heat, ultraviolet lighting, and a diet that changes as they mature. Because released pets can establish invasive populations and compete with native turtles, responsible ownership includes secure housing, long-term planning, and never releasing unwanted animals outdoors. Breeders, rescues, and educators often emphasize adult size and lifespan before placement.
