Mixed Variety
A mixed variety ram cichlid is a domestic Mikrogeophagus ramirezi with ancestry from more than one aquarium strain, color form, or fin type. Ram cichlids, also called German blue rams or blue rams, are small South American dwarf cichlids from warm, slow waters of the Orinoco basin. Mixed-variety fish may show traits from blue, electric blue, gold, long-fin, or balloon lines, but the label does not promise a stable look in offspring.
These rams are kept as display fish and sometimes as small-scale breeding projects, though pairs can be selective and territorial when spawning. They do best in mature aquariums with warm, soft to moderately soft water, calm tankmates, and excellent water quality; sudden swings are a common cause of losses. Buyers should look past the variety name and choose active fish with normal body shape, clear breathing, and no fin damage, especially when balloon or long-fin ancestry may be involved.
