Ram Cichlid
Mikrogeophagus ramirezi
The ram cichlid (Mikrogeophagus ramirezi), often sold as the German blue ram or blue ram, is a dwarf cichlid from warm, slow waters of the Orinoco basin in South America. It has a deep little body, extended fin rays, iridescent blue spotting, and yellow, black, and red markings that have been intensified in domestic strains. Aquarium lines may include electric blue, gold, balloon-bodied, and long-fin forms, though the healthiest fish still show alert posture and balanced movement.
Ram cichlids reward careful aquarists more than casual community-tank stocking. They prefer warm, clean, low-stress water and can decline quickly in unstable tanks, especially after rough shipping or when kept too cool. Pairs often choose flat stones, leaves, or shallow pits for eggs, and both parents may guard the spawn if tankmates are not too disruptive. Buyers should be cautious with extremely altered body shapes and weak imported batches. Breeders who maintain strong rams pay attention to temperature tolerance, fertility, parent care, and color without sacrificing basic vigor.
