Unknown Variety
Unknown variety peacock cichlid is a practical category for an Aulonocara nyassae or peacock-type cichlid whose color line and locality history are missing. These fish are common in rescue tanks, mixed retail groups, and hobbyist communities where males, females, and juveniles have been separated from their original records. A male may later develop blue, yellow, red, dragon blood, or orange blotch traits, but color alone is not enough to confirm a recognized variety.
Keeping an unknown variety is usually straightforward for an experienced Malawi cichlid aquarist. Provide hard, alkaline water, stable temperature, open swimming space, and sandy areas with some rock breaks so subordinate fish can avoid dominant males. The unknown status mainly affects breeding and resale. Offspring should be described as unknown or mixed background unless parentage is documented, and these fish should be kept out of conservation or locality-pure projects where genetic clarity matters.
