Unclassified Variety
An unclassified variety peacock cichlid is an Aulonocara nyassae or related peacock-type cichlid that has not been matched to a named color strain, locality, or commercial line. Many young fish and females look tan or gray before males develop full color, and stress can dull even strongly colored adults. Unclassified individuals may also come from mixed shipments containing blue, red, yellow, dragon blood, or orange blotch fish, where exact parentage was not recorded.
Aquarists should manage them as Lake Malawi peacocks rather than chasing a name from appearance alone. They do best in mineral-rich, alkaline water with clean filtration, sand for natural picking behavior, and enough space for male territories. Identification matters most when breeding: unclassified fish should not be used to produce offspring advertised as a pure variety or locality. Quarantine and careful observation are useful, because imported or mixed-store cichlids may arrive underfed or carrying parasites.
