Pacman Frog

Ceratophrys ornata

Pacman frogs are heavy-bodied horned frogs best known in captivity for their round shape, huge mouth, and sit-and-wait hunting style. The name is used broadly for Ceratophrys frogs, while Ceratophrys ornata is the ornate horned frog from grassland and wetland regions of southern South America. Its blotched green, brown, red, or yellow pattern helps it disappear into leaf litter and loose soil until prey comes within reach.

Keepers usually house pacman frogs alone because they are opportunistic feeders and may bite or swallow cage mates. A simple enclosure with damp burrowing substrate, steady warmth, clean water, and hiding cover suits their natural behavior better than a display packed with climbing decor. Feeding should be measured, since inactive adults gain weight easily. Captive-bred albino, pattern, and color strains are widespread, so buyers often consider both the frog's appearance and its feeding response.
