African Black
The African Black ostrich is a domesticated breed developed primarily for farming and commercial purposes. Originally derived from the wild common ostrich, this breed has been selectively bred for its notable attributes, including a more docile temperament, which makes it easier to manage in farming environments. These birds are characterized by their robust size, with adult males reaching up to nine feet in height and weighing as much as 330 pounds. They are distinctive for their luxurious, jet-black plumage with contrasting white wing tips that make them particularly appealing for ornamental purposes.
The African Black ostrich is well-adapted to a variety of climatic conditions, although it thrives best in warmer environments. This breed is primarily raised for its high-quality feathers, leather, and meat, which is known for being low in fat and cholesterol. In terms of behavior, African Black ostriches tend to be less aggressive than their wild counterparts, which, coupled with their ability to reach maturity more quickly, makes them ideal for ostrich farming operations.
Due to its commercial value, the African Black ostrich plays an important role in the agricultural economies of several countries, predominantly in Africa, but it has also been successfully introduced to ostrich farms globally. The breed's ability to adapt to different farming practices and environments has cemented its status as a pivotal component of sustainable livestock farming.
