Mixed Variety

A mixed-variety oscar is an aquarium oscar, Astronotus ocellatus, whose color pattern does not fit neatly into a single named form such as red, tiger, albino, lemon, blue, super red, or wild type. Oscars are large South American cichlids with deep bodies, broad heads, and strong appetites. Mixed-variety fish may show a dark base with orange marbling, washed albino patches, pale lemon tones, or uneven red coverage inherited from several selected lines.

Care planning should be based on adult oscar size, not the small juvenile often sold in shops. A single adult usually needs a large, well-filtered aquarium, warm stable water, and sturdy decor that can withstand digging and pushing. They eat quality cichlid pellets with occasional invertebrate or fish-based foods, but feeder fish are avoided by many keepers because of disease risk and poor nutrition. Pair bonding and spawning can occur in home aquariums, though pairs may become territorial.

Colors: Albino, Blue, Lemon, Red, Super Red, Tiger, Wild Type
