Unknown Variety
Unknown variety oscar refers to an Astronotus ocellatus whose color form was not recorded or cannot be verified. In rescues, stores, and private transfers, an oscar may be listed this way even if it resembles a red, tiger, albino, lemon, blue, super red, or wild-type fish. The term does not imply a separate strain; it simply leaves the variety open when appearance, parentage, or purchase history is unclear.
This label is common for surrendered adult oscars, mixed-line juveniles, and fish photographed under lighting that distorts color. Housing and feeding are the same as for any oscar: a spacious aquarium, strong biological filtration, warm stable water, and a diet built around suitable cichlid pellets. When breeding or selling, describe the fish's visible pattern honestly and avoid assigning a variety name unless the line is known.
