Wisconsin Jumbo

The Wisconsin Jumbo northern bobwhite is a hatchery strain of Colinus virginianus selected for increased body size while retaining the normal bobwhite color pattern. The name is used in the gamebird trade for large, wild-type bobwhites rather than for a separate taxonomic form. Many lines are promoted for dressed weight and substantial eggs, though actual mature size depends on the breeder, feed program, and how long the birds are allowed to grow.

Raising Wisconsin Jumbos is similar to raising other bobwhite quail, but their heavier bodies reward good nutrition and roomy, non-slippery housing. Chicks are started on high-protein gamebird crumble with steady heat, then moved to grow-out or breeding pens that limit crowding and head injuries. They can be useful for farm production, training preserves, and hobby flocks; before buying or releasing birds, check local rules for northern bobwhite possession, transport, and stocking.
