Butler
The Butler northern bobwhite is a captive gamebird strain of Colinus virginianus, usually kept in wild-type brown, buff, and white plumage rather than as a separate color mutation. It is one of the larger bobwhite lines sold by hatcheries, selected for a heavier body and table qualities while retaining the basic appearance and call of the species. The name refers to a production strain rather than a separate wild subspecies, so size and uniformity can vary by breeder.
In practice, Butler bobwhites are managed like other domestic bobwhite quail but need room and footing that suit their heavier build. Chicks require gamebird starter and careful brooder heat; adults do best in dry pens with cover, clean water, and enough space to reduce picking and fighting. They are used for meat, eggs, dog-training birds, and small gamebird projects, but releases and transport may require permits because northern bobwhite are regulated wildlife in many places.
