Unknown Breed

For maroon-bellied conures, unknown breed usually means a Pyrrhura frontalis identified to species but not assigned to a documented subspecies, color mutation, or captive line. The maroon-bellied conure, also called the maroon-bellied parakeet, is a small South American Pyrrhura with a mostly green body, a darker scaly-looking breast, reddish tail, and the maroon wash on the lower belly that gives it its common name. In aviculture the normal green form is far more typical than named varieties, and many birds are described simply by species, hatch year, sex, and band or microchip information.

Practical care is similar to other Pyrrhura conures: a secure cage or indoor aviary, daily flight or climbing time, and fresh branches or wood toys to destroy. Diet is usually built around pellets and vegetables, with modest fruit and seed. Because this species can be confused with green-cheeked conures or hybrids, breeding birds should be checked carefully before pairing. Buyers and rescues can treat missing breed or mutation history as normal unless lineage is being represented for a breeding program.
