Lion
Panthera leo
The lion, Panthera leo, is the largest social cat, built around cooperative hunting, territorial defense, and pride life. Most wild lions live in sub-Saharan Africa, while a small Asiatic lion population survives in and around the Gir Forest landscape of western India. Adult males carry manes that vary with age, genetics, climate, and condition; females are usually the main hunters. Lions prey on medium to large hoofed mammals, but they also scavenge and compete with hyenas, leopards, wild dogs, and people around livestock.
Lions are not suitable private pets; in many places possession is prohibited or limited to licensed facilities. Professional care takes place in accredited zoos, sanctuaries, and managed reserves with reinforced barriers, shift yards, veterinary programs, and meat diets balanced with bone, organs, and supplements when whole prey is not used. Breeding is normally coordinated through studbooks or regional plans to prevent inbreeding and surplus animals. Field conservation work focuses on prey recovery, anti-snare patrols, corridor protection, and reducing conflict through better livestock husbandry and compensation programs.
