Unclassified Strain

Unclassified strain lesser mealworm refers to an Alphitobius diaperinus colony that has not been assigned to a named strain, selected line, or verified source category. The animals are still lesser mealworms, the larval stage of a small darkling beetle, but their color range or production history is not specific enough for a narrower label. This is common in feeder insect colonies, laboratory starter cultures, and small-scale production where lines are maintained for utility rather than formal strain identity.

Care is practical and colony-based. A stable warm container, dry edible substrate, a controlled moisture source, and regular removal of spoiled material help keep the insects productive. Escapes should be prevented, especially around poultry areas or stored feed. If the colony is used for feeding reptiles, amphibians, birds, or fish, gut-loading and appropriate prey size matter. Unclassified strain is a better label than inventing a line name when the colony's origin and selection history are not known.
