Mixed Strain

Mixed strain lesser mealworms are colonies of Alphitobius diaperinus with blended or uncertain strain background. The species is a small darkling beetle whose larvae are used as feeder insects, research animals, and poultry-house organisms, depending on context. Color words such as tan, brown, dark, or white may describe life stage, molt condition, or selected colony traits rather than a stable breed in the livestock sense. A mixed strain label signals that the colony is not being represented as a single controlled line.

Practical management focuses on clean colony culture. Keepers need suitable bran or grain-based substrate, controlled warmth, modest moisture, ventilation, and separation from unwanted pests or mold. Feeder colonies should be gut-loaded and handled with attention to the needs of the animals being fed. Because lesser mealworms can persist in poultry facilities and stored materials, containment matters. For breeding or supply records, mixed strain is a useful honest label when the colony origin has been combined over time.
