Unknown Strain

Unknown strain laboratory nematode refers to Caenorhabditis elegans whose strain background is not known. This may happen when a plate loses its label, a culture is passed along without stock information, or worms are retained after their original purpose is forgotten. The animals may look like ordinary wild type worms, but appearance alone cannot confirm strain identity.

The safest use for an unknown strain is general culture, demonstration, or non-critical observation. It should not be used as a reference strain, crossed into documented lines, or reported as a named stock without verification. Basic care still matters: clean plates, suitable temperature, fresh bacterial food, and timely transfers. Clear relabeling as unknown prevents later confusion and protects better-documented cultures nearby.
