Unclassified Strain
An unclassified strain laboratory nematode is a Caenorhabditis elegans culture whose species is identified, but whose exact strain name or genotype has not been assigned. The worms may appear wild type, and the culture may be perfectly viable, yet the label means there is not enough information to place it among named stocks such as N2 or a defined mutant line.
Unclassified C elegans can be useful for observation, teaching, or preliminary culture practice, but it should be kept separate from verified strains. Managers should record where the culture came from, transfer dates, temperature, contamination events, and any obvious traits. If a laboratory later needs exact identity, the culture may require genotyping, source confirmation, or replacement with a documented stock.
