Mixed Strain

A mixed strain laboratory nematode is a Caenorhabditis elegans culture that includes more than one strain background or cannot be reduced to a single clean strain name. C elegans strains can differ in behavior, development, fertility, stress response, and visible markers, so a mixed label matters even when the worms look similar under low magnification. It describes uncertain or combined ancestry rather than a stable strain category.

Mixed strain cultures are useful for demonstrations, classroom observation, or situations where exact genotype is not important. They are unsuitable for experiments that depend on repeatable strain behavior. Good practice is to keep mixed cultures away from named stocks, label plates clearly, and note any known parent strains or visible markers. Regular transfer technique and contamination checks remain the foundation of care.
