Mixed Breed

A mixed breed laboratory mouse is a Mus musculus animal or colony without a single defined inbred strain, outbred stock, or planned cross that fully describes it. The group may include albino and black animals, or descendants from several backgrounds. This label is useful when the animal's species and laboratory context are known, but strain identity is too mixed or incomplete for a narrower name.

Mixed breed mice may be appropriate for teaching colonies, feeder production where permitted, or non-strain-specific husbandry, but they should be avoided in research that depends on known genetic background. Managers should keep practical notes on source, pairings, coat color, temperament, litter size, and any health concerns. Clear labeling protects both the animals and the people making decisions about breeding, placement, or experimental use.

Colors: Albino, Black
