Balb/C

BALB/c is an inbred albino laboratory mouse strain of Mus musculus used widely in immunology, cancer biology, infectious disease research, vaccine work, and antibody production. The mice have white coats and pink eyes, but their main identity is genetic standardization rather than appearance. Because BALB/c colonies are inbred, animals from well-maintained sources are expected to be highly similar genetically, giving researchers a repeatable background for controlled comparisons. Substrains can still differ, so exact naming matters.

Management of BALB/c mice centers on controlled housing, health surveillance, enrichment, and accurate colony records. Breeding programs track source, substrain, generation, pathogen status, and any experimental history because small colony differences can affect results. These mice are best understood as research animals, not casual pet-shop stock. Handling, breeding, euthanasia policies, and veterinary oversight should follow institutional animal-care standards and local rules.
