King Vulture

Sarcoramphus papa

The king vulture, Sarcoramphus papa, is a large New World vulture of tropical lowland forests from southern Mexico through Central America and much of northern South America. Adults have a mostly white body, black wing edges and tail, and a bare head marked with orange, yellow, red, and purple skin. The orange caruncle above the bill becomes more developed with age. King vultures feed mainly on carrion and have a powerful bill that helps open tough hides, after which smaller scavengers may feed more easily.

This species is managed by zoos, raptor centers, and conservation programs, not private pet keepers. Captive care requires spacious aviaries, high perches, careful hygiene around meat diets, and quiet nesting areas for established pairs. They usually lay a single egg, so each breeding attempt is valuable in managed populations. Field conservation centers on intact forest, safe carrion sources, and reduced persecution or illegal capture. Like other vultures, they are vulnerable to poisoned carcasses and contaminants, making community outreach and carcass-safety work important in areas where livestock, hunting, and scavengers overlap.
