Jerboa

Jaculus jaculus

The jerboa listed as Jaculus jaculus is commonly known as the lesser Egyptian jerboa, a small desert rodent found across arid parts of North Africa and the Middle East. It has oversized hind legs, tiny forefeet, a long balancing tail with a dark-and-light tuft, and a sandy coat that blends into open dunes and gravel flats. Jerboas are nocturnal, spending hot days in burrows and emerging at night to hop rapidly between seeds, green shoots, and occasional insects.

Private keeping is uncommon and often affected by import or wildlife rules. These animals are built for speed and sudden leaps, so a simple hamster cage is unsafe; specialist setups use secure, spacious enclosures with deep stable substrate, dry air, warm retreat areas, and quiet daytime conditions. Diets should reflect desert foraging rather than sugary pet treats, and handling is kept minimal because stress and jumping injuries are real concerns. Zoos or experienced small-mammal keepers may maintain jerboas for education or behavioral observation, but they remain a niche species in captivity.
