Unknown Strain
Unknown strain Japanese amberjack means the fish is recognized as Seriola quinqueradiata, but its broodstock source or strain history cannot be verified. In the wild, Japanese amberjack are migratory schooling predators around Japan and nearby western North Pacific waters. In farms, strain labels may refer to wild-caught seed origin, hatchery families, or selected lines used for growth and culture performance.
When strain is unknown, husbandry decisions still depend on the species' needs: clean seawater, high dissolved oxygen, room for constant swimming, and a feeding program suited to carnivorous marine fish. The unknown label matters most for breeding, research, and farm traceability, where disease history, growth expectations, and genetic diversity are part of risk assessment. It is rarely meaningful for small private aquariums because the species outgrows ordinary systems.
