Grade

A grade hinny is a horse-donkey hybrid whose parentage is not tied to registered or named breed stock. The animal is still a hinny, produced from a stallion and a jenny, but its horse and donkey backgrounds are described by type, use, size, or appearance rather than formal paperwork. Grade hinnies are common wherever working equines are bred for local needs.

Grade hinnies are best judged as individual saddle, pack, driving, or companion animals. Their value depends on training, soundness, disposition, and suitability for the job, not on a registry name. Many are hardy and efficient on forage, but thoughtful nutrition and routine veterinary attention still matter. When buying or rehoming one, ask about handling history, hoof care, trailer experience, and whether the animal has lived with horses, donkeys, or other hinnies.
