Giant Panda

Ailuropoda melanoleuca

The giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) is a bear native to mountain bamboo forests of central China. Its black-and-white coat, rounded body, strong jaws, and enlarged wrist bone used like a thumb are tied to a life spent feeding mostly on bamboo. Although it belongs to the bear family, its diet is unusually specialized, and wild pandas move through forests to find the right bamboo species, shoots, leaves, and stems across seasons.

Human management combines reserve protection, bamboo forest restoration, captive breeding, and careful international zoo programs. Captive pandas need large quiet habitats, constant access to appropriate bamboo, cool resting areas, climbing structures, and veterinary monitoring of digestion, teeth, weight, and reproduction. Breeding is complicated by brief female fertility windows and the need for careful cub support when twins are born. Field conservation also addresses habitat corridors, road and development barriers, and genetic exchange among mountain populations so isolated groups do not become trapped in small forest blocks.
